Delta voorziet 11.000 piloten van Microsoft Surface Tablets.
Delta Airlines zal alle 11.000 piloten uitrusten met een Microsoft Surface 2 tablet. De tablet zal gebruikt worden als een Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) ter vervanging van de (zware) papieren kaarten en vliegtuighandleidingen en procedures. De Surface 2 zal draaien op het Windows RT 8.1 platform. Vliegcrews moeten hiermee makkelijk bij essentiële toepassingen kunnen en altijd de meest recente vlieginformatie hebben. Waaronder navigatiekaarten, handleidingen en checklists. Delta verwacht dat de electronic flightbag een brandstofbesparing van 13 miljoen dollar zal opleveren.
De tablets zullen eind dit jaar worden uitgedeeld aan de cockpitbemanning van de 757 en 767 vloot van Delta. Eind 2014 moet de hele cockpit papierloos zijn.

Real-time toegang
Delta’s electronic flight bag zal gebruik maken van Jeppesen’s FliteDeck Pro application, speciaal gebouwd voor het Windows platform. De interactieve software geeft crews sneller en efficienter toegang tot belangrijke realtime informatiezoals kaarten en navigatie tools.

Dus straks wordt er niet alleen in de cabine gebruik gemaakt van tablets, ook in de cockpit kan men niet zonder. Overigens is Delta niet de eerste die gebruik maakt van EFB’s. In juni maakt American Airlines bekend dat ze de implementatie van de Apple iPad als EFB hadden voltooid.
