Delta koopt 50 nieuwe widebody toestellen bij Airbus. Dit bevestigt Airbus.
De 50 toestellen worden gelijk verdeeld tussen de A350-900 en A330-900neo. Er is lang onderhandeld met Airbus en Boeing waarbij Airbus het dus gewonnen heeft. Boeing zegt dat de belangrijkste reden is dat Airbus sneller kan leveren. De eerste A350 voor Delta komt van 2017 en de A330neo vanaf 2019. Volgens Flightglobal zijn er nog 12 lege productie-slots voor de Dreamliner in 2017.
Delta wil de ouder wordende 747’s en 767’s vervangen en keek dus niet alleen naar Airbus maar ook naar Boeing. Naast de 787 was de 777 ook een optie. Delta vliegt al veel met de huidige generatie A330’s, 32 zijn er nu in de vloot en naast deze nieuwe bestelling moeten er nog 10 geleverd worden. Daarnaast zijn er 126 A319 en A320 in de vloot en nog 45 A321’s in bestelling.

Handig voor Delta is de Common Type Rating A330-A350, waarmee piloten op beide toestellen kunnen vliegen, waardoor ze flexibeler inzetbaar zijn.
