Nasa, Boeing en SpaceX geven 26 januari een persconferentie over hun ambitie vanaf 2017 weer astronauten de ruimte in te sturen. Zowel Boeing als SpaceX hebben hier een ruimtevaartuig voor ontwikkeld, respectievelijk de CST-100 en Crew Dragon.
Deze vaartuigen moeten volledig geautomatiseerd naar het ISS gaan met crew aan boord. De crew monitort de voortgang en kan zich zo alleen op de meest belangrijke taken richten. Beide ruimteschepen kunnen door de crew worden bestuurd als er iets mis gaat.

Momenteel vliegen er al vrachtvarianten van de toestellen.
“The intent here is to be predominantly automated so that, particularly in an emergency lifeboat scenario, you want to be able to have the crew jump in, close the door, hit the easy button and come home. We really want it to be as close to the Star Wars vision of the escape pod as possible.”
