Een cartoon op de voorkant van het Franse magazine Charlie Hebdo is slecht gevallen.
Het blad is gepubliceerd op 5 augustus, vlak na de vondst van de flaperon op La Réunion. De juichende mensen zeggen: “We hebben een deel van de piloot en flight attendant gevonden”. Charlie Hebdo staat erom bekend harde cartoons te publiceren. Na publicatie werd veel gesproken over de cartoon, ook door nabestaanden: “This is unethical of the magazine and disgusting as it (caricature) humiliates everyone and everything. I cannot believe that such a company or people (behind the magazine) still exist!”
De man van één van de flight attendants aan boord van MH370 zegt: “Little did I realise that instead of finding more news on the debris, I stumbled on a picture, both cynical and obscene. If their popularity and sales increase from this publication, it is because of people who enjoy this kind of humour. They probably don’t understand how it feels when families go missing or are involved in a terrible tragedy, and no remains are found.”
Een aantal Britse kranten zeggen in hun commentaar dat Charlie Hebdo te ver gaat.
De Maleisisch-Chinese belangenvereniging MCA gaat het verst en roept op tot censuur. “French authorities & media organisations worldwide should censure Charlie Hebdo for humiliating MH370 crew & passengers. MCA recognises that press freedoms in western countries are far more liberal than Southeast Asia. Unfortunately, it is these unbridled press freedoms that has enabled abuse, unethical reporting and vile images to permeate for the sake of commercial gains.”
“MCA admonishes Charlie Hebdo for equating the tragedy of MH370 with caricaturizing politicians (as the latter commonly publishes), by mocking MAS pilots and its very dedicated cabin crew who have won international awards for inflight-services and quality.”
