Airbus wil het weer proberen na de Concorde: Supersonisch vliegen.

Airbus Defense and Space en Aerion maken vandaag een samenwerkingsverband bekend om een supersonische businessjet te gaan maken. Aerion is al onderweg met de ontwikkeling en Airbus gaat dit nu ondersteunen.
Supersonic Business Jet
De Supersonic Business Jet (SBJ) gaat mach 1.4-1.5 vliegen. Het toestel kan een transatlantische vlucht aan in 4,2 uur (de Concorde deed het in 3,5 uur of minder). Aerion kiest ervoor om bestaande motoren te gebruiken om zo de ontwikkelkosten en -problemen te verminderen. Het gaat om de Pratt & Whitney JT8D, een wat oudere motor die onder andere werd gebruikt voor de eerste types 737. Er zijn twee snelheids-sweetspots: mach 1,5 en 0,95.

anaf New York zijn Moskou en Rome is net haalbaar met het toestel. Vanaf Dubai vliegt de SBJ naar alle bestemmingen in Europa, Azië en Afrika. De cabine is vergelijkbaar met een midsize jet. Er gaan 8-12 mensen in en je kan er in staan. De hoogte is 1,88 meter en de cabine is ruim 9 meter lang.
Aerion heeft een speciale coating ontwikkeld die ervoor moet zorgen dat de sonic boom wordt verminderd. Er zijn al meerdere tests gedaan samen met NASA onder een F-15B straaljager. In grote lijnen werkt het prima, momenteel zijn ze de kleine imperfecties aan het gladstrijken.
In de VS zal de SBJ met mach 0,99 vliegen, want harder mag niet. In andere gebieden mag de sonic boom op aarde niet hoorbaar zijn. Door de coating kan Aerion tot mach 1,1 vliegen. Boven oceanen en andere gebieden waar geen geluidsregel is vliegt men met mach 1,5.
Aerion zegt al 50 ‘letters of intent’ te hebben, dat houdt in dat een maatschappij aangeeft veel interesse te hebben. Voor elke ‘letter’ is € 250.000 ingelegd. Een toestel zal uiteindelijk € 80 miljoen gaan kosten.

Airbus Group and Aerion Corporation have agreed to collaborate on technologies associated with the future of high-performance flight. To further their mutual objectives, both companies will exchange knowledge and capabilities in design, manufacturing and certification.
For Aerion, this means collaboration to advance the development and commercialization of the Aerion AS2 supersonic business jet.
Under the agreement, Airbus Group, through its Defence and Space Division, will provide technical and certification support, which will include the assignment of senior engine
ering staff to Aerion’s expanding development organization.
Aerion and Airbus Defence and Space professionals will work together at Aerion’s new and larger engineering offices in Reno, Nevada.

The joint effort provides expanded engineering capabilities to Aerion as it enters a design phase in which propulsion systems, structures, avionics and equipment are specified and sourced. Under the current timeline, Aerion is targeting first flight of the AS2 in the 2019 timeframe. “This agreement a ccomplishes two major objectives,” according to Aerion CEO Doug Nichols. “It provides validation from the industry leader in aerospace innovation, and it decisively kicks the program into high gear. Each company will benefit. Aerion moves quickly toward building a supersonic jet, and Airbus Group gains exclusive access to more than a decade of successful research and proprietary high-performance aircraft technology.”
Initial collaboration activities have commenced between engineering teams from Aerion and Airbus Defence and Space, which is Airbus Group’s principal liaison organization for AS2 development.
