Lockheed Martin heeft een speciale afdeling: Skunk Works. Zij houden zich uitsluitend bezig met de toekomst. Ook nu is weer een interessant toestel bedacht, de ARES: Aerial Reconfigurable Embedded System.
Het is een kruising tussen een helikopter en een turboprop. Hij heeft een kleine landingszone nodig dan een heli en hij vliegt sneller dan de meeste heli’s: 370 km/u of 200knots. Hij wordt op afstand bestuurd.
Uniek is dat het niet veel meer dan een vleugel is. In het midden kan van alles gekoppeld worden. Een cabine voor personen, een container met spullen, een jeep enzovoort. Op het filmpje wordt het duidelijk uitgelegd.

Formerly known as Transformer (TX), ARES’ unique design could adapt to multiple missions with interchangeable payloads; including cargo pods, medical evacuation units, a tactical ground vehicle, troops, and armed scout, reconnaissance and strike capabilities. This flexibility combined with emerging autonomous unmanned air vehicle control systems provides terrain-independent transportation and cargo supply capability to ground combat units.
Compared to a conventional helicopter, ARES’ tilting ducted fans provide a safer operating environment that’s half the landing zone with faster transit speeds of up to 200 knots.
